As a sci-fi skeptic, I keep wondering if I’m even remotely the audience Babylon 5 was intended for. But having been roped in by an ardent fan to watch the whole series, I feel legitimized in my right to kibbitz. I’ll be updating this post with unimportant musings as I make my progress.
S2.E19. First and foremost: is it only me, or is Sheridan written like a Michael Scott character, but directed and acted as if he’s Captain Kirk with a touch of Galactic Jesus? By now it should be clear to all that the square-jawed, Ken-doll captain run on cringe fuel and misplaced self-righteousness, yet somehow enjoys the adulation and loyalty of every member of every race he meets. If I could change only one thing about the show, I’d add Jim Halpert-like reaction shots every time Sheridan speaks, keeping the dialogue as is.
Meanwhile, the arc of Londo’s descent — his vitiation both by his power thirst and the gravitational pull of great events — is almost too good and too multidimensional for this show.
More to come.
